Two and a Half Men: Shut Down!
Two and a Half Men, the biggest sitcom in the US – now in its eighth season –, will most likely be cancelled or continue without its main star, Charlie Sheen, after the 45-year-old actor unleashed his anger at the show’s producers and creator, for trying to get him on the right track.
Earlier this year (January 27th), the actor, whose real name is Carlos Irwin Estevez, was rushed to the hospital after an episode of late-night partying, another addition to his long string of drugs-alcohol-and-sex-driven behaviour. Soon after, Sheen checked himself into rehab, a decision supported by the Two and a Half Men producers, who in turn, decided to put the production of the CBS sitcom on hold. It seems, however, that the situation was not as amiable as advertised between the two parts. In a recent outburst on a radio podcast, Sheen called Chuck Lorre – the creator of the show – a “turd”, as part of a more elaborate verbal attack against Lorre, and also blasted the Alcoholics Anonymous, referring to it as a “cult” for “stupid people”; he claimed that he has a “100 %” success rate in curing his own addictions, unlike AA members.
Rightfully so, CBS and Warner Bros. issued a statement, following Sheen’s rants, saying: “Based on the totality of Charlie Sheen’s statements, conduct and condition, CBS and Warner Bros. Television have decided to discontinue production of Two and a Half Men for the remainder of the season.” But their action has only “awoken a sleeping giant”, as Sheen put it. He continued his tirade in a letter sent to TMZ.com, from the Bahamas – where he is on vacation with his two new girlfriends –, which reads:
“What does this say about Haim Levine [Chuck Lorre] after he tried to use his words to judge and attempt to degrade me? I gracefully ignored this folly for 177 shows. I fire back once and this contaminated little maggot can’t handle my power and can’t handle the truth. […][The show’s producers] kept getting up into my grill, kept telling me how to live my personal life. I’m saying “back off-back off”, and they wouldn’t. I’m the type of guy who doesn’t hassle anybody…I think everybody’s got a black belt and a gun… so, I don’t get in anybody’s business. I kept asking for that respect and I couldn’t get it, I couldn’t get it. These guys are a couple of AA Nazis and just blatant hypocrites. They just do not practice what they preach; it’s so transparent and so sad.”
The troubled actor also considers that the hit show is done for good: “Can you imagine going back into the sludge pit with those knuckleheads at this point? Can you imagine? It would go bad quickly” – his words immediately triggered speculations about the show being cancelled or about Charlie being replaced. John Stamos was even rumored to take Charlie’s place, but the former took it to his twitter saying “contrary to the rumors, I am not replacing Charlie Sheen on Two and a Half Men. However, Martin Sheen has asked me to be his son.” A bit of humour is welcomed, although it seems that Sheen’s career is in jeopardy.
Morgan Creek Productions CEO James Robinson stated: “if Charlie doesn’t straighten up … I unfortunately can’t put him in the movie [Major League 3]”. The executive producer added: “After dealing with Lindsay Lohan on Georgia Rule, I can speak for someone who has experienced the difficulties of working with an actor dealing with addiction”.
So, even though the eighth series of Two and a half Men has abruptly ended, there is nothing certain regarding the show’s following season or Sheen’s future direction… yet.
One thing is for sure: Charlie Sheen is as entertaining off screen as he is on screen!
