Hollywood, … fancy a Razzie?
With all the Oscar buzz and fuss each year, people almost forget about their less popular counterparts – the Razzie Awards. This doesn’t mean, however, they’re less important, moreover since they’ve aimed at dishonoring the worst performances and film productions to come out of Hollywood, since 1980.
The 31st Edition of the annual Razzie Awards was dedicated to “celebrating and honoring” all the “sequels, remakes, and 3D rip-offs” that dominated 2010. Traditionally held a night before the Oscars, at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre in Hollywood, the Razzie Award “ceremony” revealed this year’s “winners” on Saturday, February 26th.
…and the winners are: …
The big “winner” of the Razzie evening, was The Last Airbender, which won the award for Worst Director, Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3-D – a new a Razzie category for 2010 –, and Worst Supporting Actor (Jackson Rathbone, who also plays the role of Vampire Jasper in the Twilight Saga). In the Worst Picture category, the Last Airbender managed to steal away the prize from The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, The Bounty Hunter, Sex and the City 2, and Vampires Suck, also nominated for it.
Ashton Kutcher received a Razzie for Worst Actor, for his performances in Killers and Valentine’s Day, while the Razzie for Worst Actress went to the group of “fabulous four” of Sex and the City 2: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristen Davis. The glamorous chick flick was in fact the other big winner of the evening, also securing Razzies for Worst Sequel and Worst Screen Ensemble.
The Worst Supporting Actress Razzie Award was won by Jessica Alba. The actress finally won the not-so-much-desired award with her fifth nomination, for her performances in four films: The Killer inside Me, Little Fockers, Valentine’s Day and Machete.
Some bitterness – if there is any – is expected to come off during tonight’s Oscars Ceremony (February 27th, 2011).
